The public space at 152 Architektų Street is about to change. The community of Lazdijai will be presented with the renewed design of the square with the sculpture of “Ryto”, which the architects have prepared taking into account the previous proposals of the residents and the discussion of the design brief held in June. The public space is being landscaped with a clear understanding of its historical and representational importance for the Lazdiniai district. The existing functions of the square are preserved by adding missing infrastructure elements or renewing worn-out ones. The most significant changes are that the design re-prioritises the space for recreation and representation by reducing the surface area of hard surfaces, providing a rain garden for sustainable rainwater harvesting, installing a mist fountain, providing functional spaces for community use and a market, and resolving the current dysfunctional layout of car parks by organising orderly parking spaces along the carriageway. To emphasise the representational function of the space, lighting of the sculpture “Rytas” and a place for flags are planned.
The history of this project dates back to 2020, when planning for the reconstruction of the square began at the initiative of the Lazdynai Ryto community. Back then, local residents actively participated in an online survey and meetings to provide ideas for the functionality and aesthetics of the square. The design proposals based on these discussions reflect the needs and wishes of the residents, making this space even more attractive for the Lazdiny community. On 5 June, a remote meeting was held to invite the residents of Lazdiniai to get acquainted with the proposed changes to the square in front of the Ryto sculpture. The design brief, which has been prepared taking into account the feedback and wishes of the community, was presented at the event. The aim of the meeting was to involve residents in the decision-making process for the management of this public space. The presentation of the design proposals is the last stage of the public consultation. Once the design proposals have been approved, the technical design will be prepared and, subsequently, the contract will be executed.
Design proposals were prepared by ID Vilnius, Vilnius City Parks.
